Some of us just enjoy cartoons. They were a wonderful part of childhood, showing us important lessons, sending us to journeys that we could only dream of. Some of us, too, had a favorite cartoon figure that we were longing for, wished to be like. Nor have you ever wanted animated characters to be a little more realistic? It can be hard to relate to someone with overdramatized features — huge eyes small waist, etc. Well, this artist, known on social media as Toyboyfan, has decided to show us what well-known Disney characters would look like if they were realistic.
He developed a project called “In Real Life” where he used artificial intelligence and his creative talents to create hyper-realistic portraits of well-known Disney characters.
“For these A.I. edits, I typically start with a photo of a Disney character and a photo of a real life individual who I think looks like that character, then I put the two in the A.I. software that I use to blend the two together. Afterwards, the result might look a little odd, so I take the resulting photo and combine it with another photo, and so on, until I get a more realistic photo of that kin. Then I’ll take a picture of Photoshop and start making tweaks here and there to make it look even more like a character, like changing the color of the eye or refining the face, “the artist said.
Toyboyfan is a college student with a major in graphic design. In his spare time, he likes to play video games, particularly creative ones like Minecraft. He hopes that one day he will be able to build beautiful stories and worlds with his art: “Thankfully, I have a very loving family that helped me get to where I am today.”
“As to how the idea came about, I originally decided to make a real-life portrait of Kristoff from Disney Frozen, just to improve my editing skills. I posted it to my Tumblr, and all of a sudden, everyone asked me to do the other Frozen characters. Once I did the others, and I posted that, I started seeing the images being uploaded all over the internet, so many people were amazed. Then I realized they were asking if there would be any other Disney Princesses, so I decided to start making them as well.
We asked the artist what inspired him to make art — how he started his journey. He mentioned that he’s been creating art for as long as he can remember: “Since I was a child, the behind-the-scenes features of movies, particularly animated movies, have fascinated me. I’ve always been amazed how a whole world could be created by starting with a blank canvas.”
“My favorite thing about making art is getting to see the end product after all the time and hard work I put into it. My least favorite part is how long it can take to make a work sometimes,” the artist shared.
It takes about an hour for the artist to make a single edit, depending on the character. He shares why he chose Disney: “Because I’ve seen so many different interpretations of Disney characters in real life, I’ve always wanted to try to create my own version of the idea.”
